with no more sound than mice make May 29-31

‘Listening’ 2025, stoneware ceramic, underglaze, t ‘Listening’ 2025, stoneware ceramic, underglaze, twine, horsehair, hessian, variable dimensions. This sculpture will be exhibited as part of @unprimed_collective latest project ‘with no more sound than the mice make’ this coming weekend at Safehouse 1, 139 Copeland Road Peckham, 30-31 May 12-5pm (PV 4-7.30 Sat 30 May)

Matthew Swift is a painter and mixed media artist who works between Whitstable UK and Melbourne Australia. He sees his queer body as a kind of highly sensitised rover-machine that is trained to pick up beauty and danger as it crosses changeable landscapes. ‘Listening’s’ coiled ceramic form is conceived as a stand-in for his ear; a souped-up vintage hearing trumpet that contains highly sensitised sound receivers whilst the fabric conduits transport noise-information through their horsehair stuffing for centralised processing. ‘Listener’ is a four coloured stone lithograph print, a portrait of the clay horn form from ‘Listening’, the fruity colours celebrate exuberant facets of the sculpture that wish to connect and communicate with the viewer.

CONTRARIWISE
7 – 31 May

“if it was so, it might be; and if it were so, it would be; but as it isn’t, it ain’t. That’s logic.” Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking Glass

Contrariwise is the first exhibition of the refreshed studio1.1 in partnership with Sluice. To mark this coming together, we’re celebrating the communities that support our respective initiatives, presenting an exhibition drawn from Members (studio1.1) and Friends (Sluice).

Running artist-led projects has always required a willingness to believe in unlikely things: that spaces will survive, that conversations will continue, that artists with very different approaches but bound by a shared ethos can flourish together. Collaboration itself can feel contrary — improbable, occasionally illogical — yet it persists.

This exhibition gathers works that sit beside one another without demanding agreement. Different voices, materials, and intentions coexist here in productive tension.
